The event will focus on the musical and dramaturgical background to the piece, explore some of the composer’s pioneering musical ideas as revealed in madrigals such as the atmospheric Hor che’l ciel e la terra, and conclude with a complete performance of Combattimento featuring Nicholas Mulroy as the Narrator 'Testo',Eamonn Dougan as Tancredi and Clare Wilkinson as Clorinda. |

The Caged Byrd In the 16th century during the years of Elizabeth's reign, Byrd trod the dangerous path as composer both of the new Anglican services but also writing Masses, and motets whose double meanings refer to the suffering of English Catholics. Here, I Fagiolini perform Byrd's powerful music interspersed with Gregorian chant. |

Muerte, Danza y Ensalada (Death, Dance and Salad) Four singers, harp, lute and vihuela explore the vibrant world of Spanish secular music of the Siglo d'Oro (Golden Age). Common themes were love, death and loss - of loved ones across social and religious divides or even whole cities such as Granada, famously taken from the Moors in 1492. Yet infectious Spanish dance-rhythms are never far away, bringing a sway and swagger to the love songs and totally dominating the 'ensaladas' (salads) that combined languages and dance in a furious celebration of Christmas |

Musicke Divine ‘Das Land ohne Musik’ (The country without music) we may have been in the 19th century but in the 16th and 20th, British music for vocal consort was second to none. Hear great artworks of the golden age from Byrd and Tallis alongside more congenial social music by Purcell and others before jumping to the 20th century’s ‘English Renaissance’ with folksongs arranged by Holst and Tippett, colourful and virtuosic medieval cries by Britten, Mark Edgley Smith’s characterful take on e.e.cummings - and a little surprise.
